Identity, Belonging & Life Between Cultures Counselling in London Bridge

When You Feel Between Worlds

Living between cultures can be enriching, but it can also be challenging.

You may have moved to a different country, grown up between cultures, or feel that you do not fully belong in one place or another. You might find yourself navigating different languages, expectations, values, or ways of life.

At times, this can leave you feeling isolated, misunderstood, disconnected, or unsure of where you truly belong.

Counselling offers a space to explore these experiences and the impact they may be having on your wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self.

The Emotional Impact of Living Between Cultures

Bereavement can affect every part of your life.

You may experience:

  • Homesickness and longing for family or home
  • Feelings of isolation or loneliness
  • Questions about identity and belonging
  • Difficulties balancing different cultural expectations
  • Feeling misunderstood or different from others
  • Loss of connection to language, traditions, or community
  • Anxiety about fitting in
  • Experiences of discrimination or exclusion
  • Challenges in relationships due to cultural differences

These experiences can affect confidence, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing.

The Emotional Impact of Living Between Cultures

The challenges of adapting to a new environment are often underestimated.

While others may see exciting opportunities, you may also be carrying experiences of loss, separation, uncertainty, or loneliness.

Understanding Loss Beyond Bereavement

When people think of grief, they often think of the death of a loved one.

However, moving countries or living between cultures can involve many forms of loss that are not always recognised by others.

You may be grieving:

  • Distance from family and friends
  • Familiar surroundings
  • Cultural traditions and customs
  • Your first language
  • A sense of certainty or familiarity
  • Parts of your identity

These losses can be deeply emotional and deserve understanding and support.

How Counselling Can Help

Questions of identity can arise at any stage of life.

You may wonder:

  • "Where do I belong?"
  • "Why do I feel different?"
  • "How do I reconcile different parts of myself?"
  • "Why do I never feel fully accepted?"
  • "Who am I when I am away from home?"

Counselling can help you explore these questions without judgement and develop a stronger sense of self that honours all parts of your experience.

My Approach

I was born in the Caribbean, lived in France, and now live in the UK. Having experienced life across different countries and cultures, I understand some of the complexities that can come with navigating different identities, communities, and ways of belonging.

Living away from family, familiar cultural surroundings, and places that feel like home can bring both opportunities and challenges. It can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness, displacement, uncertainty, or questions about where you truly belong.

My own experiences have given me a deeper appreciation of how culture, heritage, language, and life transitions can shape our sense of self. They have also helped me understand some of the emotional impact of adapting to new environments, balancing different cultural influences, and building a life away from one's roots.

As someone from a minority background, I am mindful of how experiences of difference, identity, culture, and belonging can influence emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence, and self-esteem. While every person's experience is unique, these experiences have contributed to my commitment to offering a culturally sensitive and inclusive space where all aspects of your identity are welcome.

I work with clients from diverse backgrounds, including expatriates, migrants, international professionals, refugees, asylum seekers, and anyone navigating questions of identity, belonging, or life between cultures.

My aim is to provide a space where every aspect of your identity is respected and where you can speak openly about experiences that may be difficult to discuss elsewhere.

Whether you are:

  • An expatriate
  • An international professional
  • A migrant
  • A refugee or asylum seeker
  • From a mixed cultural background
  • Living away from family and community
  • Navigating questions of race, culture, or belonging

you will be met with curiosity, respect, and compassion.
